Ayesha Mehdi, an attorney and partner at Spencer Fane LLP, earned two American Bar Association Health Law Section leadership positions in 2020 and closed the year by providing pro bono representation to enable a child’s adoption.

Mehdi became vice chair of the Coordinating Committee on Diversity, which works to ensure gender, geographic, ethnic and practice area diversity in the Health Law Section’s membership, and vice chair of the Healthcare Fraud & Compliance interest group.

Mehdi received her bachelor’s in business administration with honors from Walsh College of Accountancy and Business Administration in Troy, Michigan. She earned her master’s in health services administration and her juris doctor degree from the University of Kansas, where she serves on the law school’s board of governors.

Mehdi has substantial experience in general health care law, physician employment; recruitment; professional board complaints; reimbursement; mergers and acquisitions; corporate compliance; and joint ventures. In her pro bono representation of neglected and abused children through the Nevada Legal Aid Center’s Children’s Attorney Project (CAP), Mehdi follows in the late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s footsteps. Ginsburg believed lawyers are obliged to serve their communities by representing those who need legal help but lack the wherewithal to pay.

“This little angel’s case has been one of the most fulfilling experiences for me as a lawyer,” Mehdi wrote in a Nov. 26 Instagram post, describing the 2-year-long process. “I am incredibly grateful for the experience CAP has given me and hope many more sign up to help CAP continue to effect positive change in children’s lives.”
